THE BRAVE ONE

An intense piece of work that inspires?

The Brave One takes an interesting look at the psychological process of losing someone. Jodie Foster plays the complex lead role well. This is partly because she is so somber in general and partly because she can actually act. Regardless to say I was impressed. The supporting character played by Terrence Howard helped the movie immensely. The film was also directed appropriately by Neil Jordan, who has some solid works already behind him.

People die all the time. Everyone reacts to varying degrees depending on the circumstances. This film examines a case where the loss of the person is particularly violent and unsuspected. Which in turn is the reaction of the survivor, played by Jodie Foster. She becomes hostile, violent and unpredictable to deal with her grief. The psychology of this points to the idea of revenge. Fear is what controls her life, and to overcome this she takes control with a gun. The weapon almost becomes the centerpiece of the film. It is ultimately the medium for her transformation and what drives her character in a unique direction. She almost surrenders all emotion, excluding anger. Her vigilante attitude really becomes the entertainment value of the film. The audience is cheering for her as she takes her revenge for the gruesome death that the same audience could barely watch. It only goes to show that people react differently to death depending on the circumstances.

Terrence Howard has a complex role that puts him in the position where he must decide between right and wrong. His character transforms much less drastically than Foster’s, but remains no less entertaining to watch. This is partly because the story is well written and in part because Howard is just mesmerizing as an actor. All around, his character was critical to the successful telling of this story. When the story concluded I asked myself if I was inspired. Ironically I was a little. Not to go avenge my losses in life, but to persevere through them. And to shoot something….anything.

The Brave One is a psychological rollercoaster that thrills through violence. Both Jodie Foster and Terrence Howard do a brilliant job in the lead roles. The direction ultimately is well done too. Although not a terribly original concept, well crafted characters and writing make The Brave One worth your time.

RESIDENT EVIL: EXTINCTION

Zombies galore and nothing much more.

Resident Evil: Extinction is the third installment in the series based on the popular video game. I went into this film with no background having never played the game nor seen the first two films. I was not pumped to see it, but left content. It was entertaining and it kept a solid pace from start to finish. The visuals were decent enough so as to not distract from the film. Which can be tough when a film is packed with zombies. Milla Javovich brings the most possible to her character of Alice.

The film starts at a good pace, with the action commencing almost right away. The story picks up from there and develops nicely. Being a Resident Evil virgin I did not feel out of place. It packed enough action to keep me interested while still explaining what was going on in the story. Some series of cool visuals didn’t hurt either. Milla Javovich has some great action sequences that are masterfully choreographed and shot. She pulls the lead role off with ease and grace.

Resident Evil: Extinction is obviously connected to a larger storyline, but not enough to discourage new viewers. Going into any film of the zombie genre I expect little. Lets just say that I got more than I expected. Despite shoty dialogue, the action was pretty good and I understood it enough as a newcomer to not feel alienated.

BALLS OF FURY

An immature comedy with little to offer.

Balls of Fury is one of those movies that I couldn’t tell what it would be like. Part of me said it would be funny and the other said it looked stupid. Well I was in the mood to laugh, so I gave it a chance. Oops. From start to finish I had myself a good laugh twice. That’s not even once every thirty minutes. Between this and the gross smell of ketchup in the theatre I had a less than killer time.

It was the fact that Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon were at the helm that gave me hope. They were responsible for Reno 911!, which I enjoyed. With Balls of Fury however, they seemed to bring the humor down to a much more childish level. I haven’t seen that much ‘getting kicked in the crotch’ humor since I last watched America’s Funniest Home Videos. The jokes were sub-par and the acting over the top. Christopher Walken was pretty good, but the writing was so bad that even he couldn’t pull it off. Patton Oswalt’s character was pretty funny, but his appearance was too brief to save anything.

Balls of Fury was one of my least favorite movies of the summer. If you are a Ben Garant fan I suggest sticking to Reno 911!. The poor writing and immature humor made Balls of Fury almost tough to watch.
