RUNNING WITH SCISSORS

A fun movie with serious undertones.

I found this film to be fascinating. The characters, the story, the emotions are all so touching. The acting is exactly what you want in a movie. It seems effortless and is so well done that you don't ever feel like these people aren't real. With a killer soundtrack and stimulating visuals this film stands out.

Based on the real life memoirs of Augusten Burroughs this film is quirky and hysterical. Augusten lead a unique childhood to say the least. His parents were too in to themselves to notice him much and so he ends up living with his mother's shrink. His new family is totally bizarre and intriguing to say the least. The film covers his new experiences and growth as a teenage boy struggling to make people care about him. Joseph Cross gives a great performance as Augusten, but it is Annette Bening that steals the entire movie with every one of her scenes. She is an incredible actress and is well-deserving of her Golden Globe nomination for this role. Her character of Augusten's mother is the most complex and deep roles in the film, and Bening nails it. All of the characters are witty and fun to watch while being the ultimate pulse of this film.

Ryan Murphy wrote and directed this film well. He created a fantasy like world that seems imagined, but is actually based on true events. I think it always helps when the original writer, this case being Augusten Burroughs, is on hand to help make films more true to the book. The moments captured are hilariously outrageous, but are consistently hinting and more serious issues. When looked at deeper the film covers a broad base of issues that many of us can relate to. Family troubles, coming of age, and forced interactions with ridiculous people are all topics we have to deal with. The film makes light of some of these, but overall is rather touching in its approach.

The soundtrack is one of the best this year. It showcases great songs from the 70's that fit the mood of the film just right. Camera shots are well done and capture the sets in a very effective manner. Bright colors and great wardrobe choices add to the visual manifesto. Go into this film with an open mind and a good sense for dry humor and I think you will enjoy it.

THE GOOD SHEPERD

A heavy look into the CIA's beginnings.

The Good Shepard is an intense, almost epic, film about undercover operations by what we now know as the C.I.A. The characters are rich and well played. Robert De Niro does a great job filling his first credited directors chair. Writer Eric Roth delivers another hit after past films such as Forrest Gump and Munich. The score is set well all through the flowing plot line. Overall this was a fascinating film to watch and easy to get wrapped up in.

It all started around the time of WWII. Matt Damon plays the role of Edward Wilson who is recruited to serve the U.S. government as a agent for the newly founded Central Intelligence Agency. The story follows Wilson's struggles throughout his prominent career. The sacrifices he is forced to make are vast and irreversible. Matt Damon superbly plays his character and elequently tells his tooth-grinding story. Not to mention he is backed by a whole cast of great actors that bring Wilson's world to life.

Robert De Niro brings this film to the audience with real heart. You can tell how much effort was put into it. Every little detail seems perfect from start to finish. The time periods are captured and portrayed flawlessly. De Niro masterfully wraps up the audience in Wilson's story and makes them feel every sensation he does. The film is beautifully portrayed in an epic manner.

HARSH TIMES

A slow moving ‘why am I watching this’ sort of thing.

Harsh Times is a film that I would not go see in a theatre. Too bad I wasn’t aware of this before I went and saw it in the theatre. The story was weak and didn’t play out well on the screen. Half the movie took place in a car, which was just annoying probably because I spend so much frickin time in my car as it is. The redeeming part is just seeing Christian Bale work, and seeing Eva Longoria on the big screen.

The story was written by David Ayer, of Training Day fame, and it was just not all the way there. It never hit a level where I felt consumed by it. I constantly felt distant from it. I see part of the problem as being a lack of intimate moments. The characters don’t seem to open up or develop until the last 10 minutes of the film. There is no emotional connection created before the end, and by then it is way too late.

It seemed like at least half of Harsh Times takes place in a car. Not a terribly stimulating environment for developing characters. I can understand that this is what much of their life consisted of so it is important to the story, but c’mon. It isn’t even an interesting car. I would have liked to see more dynamic scenes that challenged the characters a little more.

The main reason I saw this film in the first place was to see how Christian Bale would pull off this role. He is one of the most exciting and professional actors working in film. He did a great job with Harsh Times, but it was not enough to save this film. Eva Longoria is making her way into the big screen scene and this was one of her first big roles. She played the role with ease and I think we will be seeing a lot more of her in films to come. I have to mention Freddy Rodriguez also because I think he did a great job in his role as Bale’s best friend.

So the acting was good, but the story wasn’t. The shots were not that interesting and the character development was very weak. It never seemed to get to any point. It just kept rolling slowly along in its monotonous manner. So Harsh Times falls pretty short from being a great film and not worth seeing in the theatres.
