BOBBY

A powerful film that gives hope for Americans in doubt of our future.

Bobby is not like anything you have seen recently. This is a film that stands out through its style and message. A politically charged piece that is unexpectedly relevant to the current state of the United States government and our nation. The ensemble cast of veterans and new comers is fantastic to watch. All the performances effectively touch your heart by stirring emotions and making you think. Just the way that characters are supposed to.

I think props must be given to Emilio Estevez for such an incredible directorial debut. He brought together an inspiring story, and an all-star cast to create his first piece of work for the big screen. This was no easy task. To write stories for so many people and still have them portray themselves with such meaning is incredible. All the characters manage to touch the audience in some way. It’s a “period” piece that captures an era in American history throughout one day in time. The struggles, the politics, and the personal effects of the 1960’s are portrayed through a whole mix of characters that have all gathered in one place for many different reasons. The entire cast gives A+ performances that really are driven by the solid direction of Estevez.

Mark Isham is still one of my favorite composers and his ability to make or break a movie will always impress me. For Bobby, he made it. The music is so subtle for most of the film, but kicks up at just the right moments to inspire the audience. The cinematography is nothing too outstanding. The film is driven so much by the cast of characters though that the standard camera angles and understated shots don’t even bother me.

Bobby is engrossing from start to finish. Each scene feels like a “big” one and the build up to the climax almost becomes tense for the audience. By the end of the film I felt inspired and hopeful for the future. Bobby regenerates your sense of compassion for mankind. Humorous scenes mixed with heartfelt stories make for a stand out film. Bobby is a unique theatre experience that certainly enlivens its audience.
